He peered through the store window
gazing in at the item he had been so fond of for the past week. Every morning on his way to see Rumpelteazer he would pass
the pet store and feast his eyes on the collar. It was a dark orange with three spikes in the front. He had fallen in love
with the beautiful collar from the moment he set eyes on it. He had to stop and admire it.
The disappointment was that Mungojerrie
couldn’t have the gorgeous collar. He had no money; cats don’t usually go into human stores and buy things. His
eyes saddened as he pressed his hands against the glass imagining the soft leather against his neck. He was sure the collar
would look fabulous on him. The colour would go great with his fur.
“Jerrie!” Teazer snapped
catching sight of the tom peering through a shop window, “Where have you been?”
Jerrie spun in surprise to the queen
who had startled him, “Oh, hi Teazer.”
“Well? Where have you been,
sir?” She tapped her foot on the ground raising a brow at him. Her annoyance wasn’t real. She just loved to tease
the tom.
“Look,” He literally
pressed his face to the glass, “Feast your eyes on it!”
Teazer looked through the glass
into the shop at the small display of collars in the window. She tilted her head to one side, “It’s real pretty.”
“Pretty?” He turned
to her in shock, “It’s gorgeous and I really want it!” Jerrie frowned.
Teazer made an odd face, “You
really want that collar?” She asked looking beyond him back into the shop.
He nodded with a half smile on his
face, “It’s really pretty. I’ve had my eye on it for some time now. But I could never afford it. I have
no way of even getting it.” He sighed looking at the pavement.
Teazer looked from the collar to
Jerrie, “I’ve got an idea!” Teazer grinned and giggled loudly, “We can steal it!”
Jerrie’s eyes lit up with
happiness. “That’s a great idea!” he smiled, “Teazer you’re brilliant!” He picked her
up in a hug and spun her around. “Teazer your rock!”
“I may rock but I’m
not a rock! You’re crushing me!” She squirmed I his grip, before he set her down, “Alright then… Let’s
get plotting.” She made a cheeky grin.
That night…
Rumpelteazer and Mungojerrie snuck
across the roof of the pet store, both carrying some sacks they had found behind the general store down the road. Jerrie approached
a vent on the roof and opened it with a creek. Teazer shoved him aside, “Me first!”
”Fine,”
He whispered, nearly losing his balance and toppling off the roofs edge. Teazer sat on the edge of the vent and slide down
the slide like tunnel. Jerrie followed her.
Teazer hit a vent at the bottom
and it flung open and she tumbled out. She let out a loud giggle as she rolled.
Jerrie flipped out after her and
stood up quickly in a panic, “Shh shh shh!” Jerrie hushed her frantically, “Are you trying to get us caught?”
He snapped in a whisper.
Teazer covered her mouth with a
free hand, “Sorry Jerr.”
Jerrie crept towards the glass case
and peered through the glass at the collar. There it was. Teazer jumped up on the glass box, “Well go on and nab it!”
Teazer bit her lip, her voice excited. Clearly the queen was having herself a good time. Jerrie had to admit the feeling of
this was fantastic. He felt so alive!
He opened the door to the case on
the side and reached his hand inside taking the collar in his hand. He brought it up to his eyes level and admired it. The
spikes were sharp, and if he wasn’t careful he could poke someone’s eyes out.
An alarm began to blare. In fear
Teazer jumped in the air and towards Jerrie. Jerrie dropped the collar and caught the queen in his arms. “What is that?”
Teazer yelled.
“An alarm- come on let’s
scram!” Jerrie panicked setting her down and picking the collar back up. He threw it into his sack and ran to the vent.
“I can’t climb back
up this, the sides are to slippery.” Teazer turned to him, “We need another escape!”
“Where?” Jerrie looked
around the store. All that was left was the door, but it was locked. But then, the tom had an idea…
The front window smashed as a chair
was thrown through it. Glass shards flew every which way and hit the ground with loud smashing and crashing. The chair landed
and skidded into the empty road.
Jerrie jumped into the window and
balanced himself on the edge looking around to make sure it was clear. Sirens blared in the distance and echoed through the
silent night. The dim light of dawn filled the sky and the tom’s emerald eyes saw nothing but an empty street. He motioned
for Teazer to follow.
She jumped out onto the pavement
as the streetlamps flickered off, signaling the break of dawn. Her tears twitched at the sound of running footsteps drew closer.
“Jerrie run!” She cried running across the road towards an empty alleyway.
Jerrie ran after her into the road.
Out of nowhere a red car zoomed towards him. In a split second the tom managed to roll out of the way, the car nearly running
him down. He panted as he rolled onto his stomach, eyes wide and a terrified look on his face. A figure appeared in the distance.
A ginger tom, blocking the sun’s rays. Jerrie squinted his eyes to see who it was.
“Jerrie are you ok?”
Teazer asked standing in his view.
Jerrie’s eyes met hers as
she took him by the arm and helped him up. “Yeah, I’m fine Teazer.” He stood up dusting the few shards of
glass and gravel that had gotten caught in his fur when he dodged the car. He looked back to where the figure had stood, and
it was gone. Confused Jerrie wrinkled his brow. Where had it gone?
“Jerrie hurry up!” Teazer
tugged on his arm darting back down the alley as the police cars came into sight. Jerrie took one last look at where the tom
had stood and bolted down the alley after his friend.
Over fences and onto roofs, the
duo raced away from the store and screaming sirens in the distance. They pushed themselves on, even when they were tempted
to stop. Teazer finally collapsed on a rooftop, Jerrie soon toppling over beside her.
Teazer’s eyes were shut tight
and she breathed heavily. Jerrie breathed heavily as well and rolled onto his back. His breathing turned into a chuckle and
then into hysterical laughter. Teazer too began to laugh.
“That was so much fun!”
Jerrie laughed still laying on his back.
Teazer giggled, “Jerrie we
need to do that again sometime!” She replied the suns warm rays reflecting off her coat.
“Defiantly.” Jerrie
sat up and reached into his sack pulling out his brand new collar. He unbuckled it and slid it around his neck. “It’s
a good fit.” He smiled looking down at it.
“We need to get something
for me next!” Teazer announced sitting up beside him. “I saw some lovely pearls over in the jewelry shop.”
“It’s gonna have crazy
security.” Jerrie replied adjusting the collar, “All the more fun.” He looked at her and smiled.
